2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Can Finidi get Super Eagles Flying Again?

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face a crucial two matches in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, taking on South Africa on June 7th and Benin Republic on June 10th. However, a cloud hangs over the team as several key players are unavailable due to injury and other factors.
The absence of attacking stars like Victor Osimhen and Ola Aina in the defense is a major blow. Osimhen’s pace and finishing have been central to the Super Eagles’ attack, while Aina’s experience and defensive solidity will be sorely missed. In midfield, the creativity of Wilfred Ndidi could be hampered without the workhorse presence of Joe Aribo by his side.

How will Finidi George adapt?

Coach Finidi George, still new in the role, has a tough task ahead. While he won one and lost one in his two friendly matches in March, these encounters lacked the pressure of a World Cup qualifier. As George himself said, “I watch our players weekly as they play in their various clubs. Honestly, my target is to win the two matches and not to be judged with the two international friendly games played.” To compensate for missing players, George might opt for a more cautious approach, with Wilfred Ndidi anchoring a deeper midfield and wingers like Samuel Chukwueze tasked with providing attacking thrust.

Tricky opponents

South Africa shouldn’t be underestimated. They boast a strong backline while Percy Tau remains a constant threat in attack. Continuity under coach Hugo Broos is another advantage for Bafana Bafana.
Benin Republic, though ranked lower, cannot be ignored. Presently handled by coach Gernot Rohr, the Cheetahs have always proved a difficult side to crack for Nigeria.
With the game billed to take place in Abidjan, Benin’s home advantage in the second match has been eroded and that’s some good news for the Super Eagles.

Nigeria behind in World Cup race

Missing out on the 2022 World Cup was a major disappointment for Nigerian fans. Qualification for the biggest stage in football carries immense national pride and inspires future generations. As analysts said, “having missed out on the last edition held in Qatar.” A strong performance in these qualifiers is crucial for coach George to win over the fans and the federation.
With just two points in their first two matches, the Super Eagles cannot afford any more slip ups.

Yes we can…

While the missing players are a significant hurdle, Nigeria still possesses a talented squad. Ademola Lookman’s red-hot form and the experience of Kelechi Iheanacho offer hope in attack. Analysts believe if Finidi George can inspire a collective effort and adapt his tactics, the Super Eagles have a chance to navigate these matches successfully even though South Africa’s quality and Benin’s ruggedness will make both games a tight affair.
