SPOTLIGHT: One-on-One with a UNILAG Model Championing Disability Rights and Supporting Visually Impaired Students in Exams

In a world where the narrative often focuses on the negative, it’s possible to erroneously judge a book by its cover.

As a model, while many of her peers are intoxicated by the allure of fashion and fame, Fareedah Afolabi has found her purpose in a far less glamorous, yet infinitely more rewarding realm: the lives of the visually impaired.

This remarkable young Nigerian is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and selflessness.

Multiple hats

As a final-year law student at the University of Lagos, Fareedah wears multiple hats – academic writer, model, and PR specialist – but it’s her work with the visually impaired that truly sets her apart.

“I’m passionate about women’s rights, equality, and advocating for the visually impaired,” Fareedah told Green Press Nigeria, her voice filled with conviction.

“I believe everyone deserves equal opportunities and treatment, regardless of their abilities.”

Passion ignited by chance

A chance encounter with a WhatsApp broadcast seeking volunteers for visually impaired students ignited a passion within Fareedah.

Despite her demanding academic schedule, she was moved by the realisation that there was a significant gap in support for these students within the university.

Driven by empathy and a desire to make a difference, she joined a group chat created back then by Naughty Professor to assist visually impaired students with their exams.

“I joined the group chat about four or five semesters ago, and although I was nervous, I was determined to make a difference,” Fareedah shared.

Fareedah’s work with the visually impaired involves guiding them through exams, introducing herself to supervisors, and ensuring they have access to necessary resources.

Her dedication has significantly impacted the lives of these students, who often face significant barriers in their educational journey.

“I provide support, not write exams for them,” Fareedah emphasizes. “It’s about empowering them to succeed on their own terms.”

Fareedah’s dedication extends beyond academic support. She advocates for the rights of people with disabilities, challenging harmful stereotypes and prejudices.

“The way Nigerians treat people with disabilities is vile. We discriminate against them, violating their rights. They are human beings and deserve to be treated as such,” she emphasized.

Fareedah’s story showcases young Nigerians’ capacity for extraordinary acts of kindness and compassion.

Positive Voice

Her work with visually impaired students exemplifies the potential for positive change within the country.

As she pursues her legal studies and advocates for marginalised groups, Fareedah Afolabi is a role model for the next generation of Nigerian leaders.

Her efforts highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, support, and inclusivity for people with disabilities in Nigeria.

Fareedah’s story reminds us that one person can make a difference. Her selflessness, passion, and commitment to creating positive change inspire us all.

“As young Nigerians, we have the power to shape our own narrative,” Fareedah says. “Let’s use our voices, talents, and resources to create a better world for everyone.”
